Creative Dance Sessions for Children at Hackhurst Farm

Children and their Grown-ups sessions are designed to be enjoyable for both adults and children! Together you will gain awareness and vocabulary around the way we move and the way it feels. Inspired by stories from mythology and folklore, we'll explore movement exercises, games and activities to encourage our bodies to try new things and to tell stories without words. We will use touch in deliberate, consensual ways and nurture the non-verbal communication we establish with children as infants.

Choreography Workshop sessions are suitable as a complement to other dance classes and also for children with no prior dance experience. Rather than focusing on a specific dance technique or style, we will be focusing on the process of clearly expressing the themes and stories that are important to us. Children are welcome to use the movements that they already know, but the emphasis will be on creating original movements and compositional choice-making to express ideas, build worlds, and portray characters through movement. We'll use a range of inspirational materials including music, poetry, pictures and stories, and explore choreographic tools such as formations, repetition, speed and level changes, chance methods, partnering (with or without contact), unison and non-unison, so that our young choreographers have everything they need to communicate their ideas. Each person will work on a solo dance to take home with them, and we will also collaborate to create a group dance over the four sessions.

About Laura Careless

Laura is a Sussex-based dance performer, choreographer and educator. Her approach to movement is informed by her dance training (Royal Ballet School, The Juilliard School) and 20 years as a professional performer on both sides of the Atlantic, as well as her long-term process of questioning, unraveling and re-integrating that training through the support of many different movement modalities.

She has performed and taught dance in a broad range of settings, from the stages of the world's great opera houses to school gyms, cancer care centres and baby/caregiver groups. She was the Dance Education Consultant for Rambert Classroom and is a Dance Curriculum Specialist for the K-12 (schools) department at The Juilliard School. She lives in Crowborough with her husband Ryan and son Owain, and also works locally as a birth/postnatal doula under her married name, Laura McAdams
